In this bachelor thesis I have focused on the use of word cards as a learning method. The purpose of the project was to see if we would be able to increase the oral participation of orally «weak» students when reviewing texts that the students had read in advance of the actual lesson. The results from this project show that the use of word cards is a good alternative to other learning methods, when the goal is to increase oral activity amongst students. Both «weak» and «strong» students seem to appreciate this method. My observations show that the use of word cards helped increase the oral participation amongst students who otherwise tend to keep a low profile when the class is engaged in oral activities. The students who normally participate actively in oral activities also indicated that they liked this learning method. The research for this bachelor thesis was performed over a short period of time in a small class with only 16 students. As a consequence, these results are to narrow and limited for me to conclude that the use of word cards can increase the activity. Whether the use of word cards led to a more active learning environment is something I cannot give an exact answer to, but I do believe that the activity will increase if this method is used regularly for some time. The method is predictable and gives all students an equal opportunity to express themselves throughout the duration of a lesson. Another benefit is that all students will receive some attention from the teacher. Even though my research showed that the oral activity increased in my test class, this does not necessarily have to be the case in other classes. I interpret my results as being positive and I will continue to use this method as a teacher. I also recommend other teachers to use word cards in their lessons.
